    Pugwash Heritage Centre
    A series of interpretive displays explain and interpret the history of Pugwash from 1800 on. Learn about Pugwash's famous resident, humanitarian Cyrus Eaton. Also learn about the salt mine and view the unique 3D re-creation of the town. Located behind the historic train station.

    Artistic Woodturning Studio

    Canso Islands National Historic Site of Canada

    This historic site, also called the Grassy Island Fort, is accessible via a short boat ride and features the ruins of an 18th century fortification, as well as a fishing station. The site was once a thriving community, and visitors today have the chance to browse through this significant area.

    Balmoral Grist Mill

    In the 1880s Alexander MacKay's water-powered Grist Mill was responsible for grinding wheat, oats, barley, rye and buckwheat. Being only one of a few mills in the area the Balmoral Grist Mill provided critically important supplies of flour and oatmeal. Today it is one of the few operating mills left in the province. Visit Balmoral and see flour being ground, examine the Mill's machinery, and take a picnic in the picturesque setting.

    An entire fishing village brought to life from the late 1700s. Interpretive centres,demonstrations by fishermen and artisans, shops, food, and an extensive boardwalk.

    The Jost House
    The Jost House, circa 1786, was purchased by Thomas Jost in 1836. Jost was a Halifax merchant and his family remained on the property until 1971. Today the house is filled with Victorian artifacts and each room features a different theme. The kitchen is housed in the basement with a cooking fireplace and a beehive bake-oven. Local collections can be found within the house, as well as 20th century medicinals.

    St. John's Anglican Rectory
    The St. John's Anglican Rectory was built starting in the 1816 by rector, Reverand Robert Aitken and his successor Reverand James Cochran. The structure has undergone some additions and renovations over the years, but most of its original character remains intact.

    Parish Hall
    The Parish Hall was built before 1879. According to the drawings on the birds-eye view maps, the original building was a five-bay hipped roof structure with a central main door facing Cornwallis Street and the St. John's Church Square. In the main hall, located most likely where the original judges bench sat, is a large mural bearing an old Coat of Arms and the inscription "Fiat Justitia ruat caelum" (Let Justice be done through heaven fall). The courthouse Moved to a new building around 1890 and the Parish Hall structure has been relatively restored back to its original splendour.

    SwissAir Flight 111 Memorial Bayswater
    This memorial is dedicated to the 229 individuals who lost their lives in the Swiss Air crash of September 2, 1998, near Peggy's Cove. The site, which looks out to the original crash site, has a huge stone wall listing the names of the passengers and crew, and a large mass grave containing the unidentified remains. Another memorial, the Whales back memorial, lies on the other side of the Bay.

    St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church
    This Church in Townsend Street has the longest history of any other Presbyterian congregation in Canada. The earliest services were conducted in open air or private until 1759, when the congregation worshiped in St. John's Anglican Church. In 1770 the first church was built on this site and Reverand Bruin Romkes Comingo began to lead the congregation. The reverand served the church for 50 years until his death. The church was replaced by his successor, Reverand Adam Moschell and over the years, with several additions and changes, has grown into the church seen standing today.

    Shand House Museum

    Relive the lives of the Shand family walking through this Victorian house, built in 1890. The then-modern ammenities, including central heating, electric lighting and even indoor plumbing, have been preserved, as have the original furnishings. The house also showcases the carriage used by the Shand children and the trophies won by Clifford Shand for racing on his high-wheeled bicycle.

    Lunenburg Old Town
    This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an excellent surviving example of pre-planned British colonial infrastructure. The town was established in 1753 as a home for protestant Germans, and still retains its original layout and appearance. The town's buildings, three-quarters of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, have been amazingly well-preserved.

    Age of Sail Heritage Centre

    The timber and shipbuilding industries are the main focus of this museum and interpretive centre. Visitors can explore a restored methodist church that dates back to 1857 and enjoy a blacksmithing demonstration.

    Carmichael-Stewart House Heritage Museum New Glasgow

    This Victorian-style house was built in 1880 and has an impressive collection of glassware, china, clothing and photographs, all of which are on display for visitors. The home was formerly owned by the Carmichael Family, who were prominent shipbuilders in New Glasgow.

    Trinity Anglican Church

    Designated a National Historic Site, Trinity Anglican Church had its origins in 1783 when almost 300 United Empire Loyalists, escorted by Admiral Sir Robert Digby aboard HMS Atalanta, sailed into port. Guided tours in the summer or by appointment.

    Government House
    The Government House was built between 1799 and 1805 for Governor Sir John and Lady Francis Wentworth. It now houses the lieutenant governor and is the oldest official government residence in Canada. It is not open to the public but worth seeing regardless.

    Evergreen House & Dartmouth Heritage Museum

    This Victoria-era house was originally built in 1867, and was inhabited for many years by famed folklorist, Helen Creighton, who documented and preserved thousands of stories and songs from Nova Scotia's past. The estate now houses the Dartmouth Heritage Museum.

    Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site

    Situated on 10 ha overlooking the Bras d'Or lake, this remarkable site commemorates the significant scientific and humanitarian contributions of the illustrious Alexander Graham Bell.     Acadian Cross Historical Site

    The Acadian Cross (also called the Deportation Cross) was erected in 1785 at Grand Pré as a memorial to the Acadians who were brutally deported from their home in the 1700's. The original cross has since been replaced with a more durable one, but the spirit remains. Interpretive signs and displays will help visitors broaden their knowledge of Acadia and the significance of the cross. Open May 3 to October 31.

    Cape George Heritage School
    This one-room school house has been converted into a museu, where one can browse a variety of atifacts, as well as records on the local community. The location also serves as the starting point a hiking trail.
