Originally home to the Mi'kmaq community who called the town Te'wapskik, it wasn't until 1710 that it was renamed Annapolis Royal by the British and became one of Canada's oldest permanent European settlements. Being one of the country's largest National Historic Districts, visitors to the town can explore several heritage sites such as the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens or the Fort Anne National Historic Site of Canada. Annapolis Royal also has a thriving arts and theatre scene with many art galleries worth exploring.
